There are two different types of transformer normally used for Low voltage lighting.
Wire-wound Transformers
Sometimes called "ferro-magnetic or iron-core", are the older type transformer that are heavy in weight due to their construction of many turns of wire wrapped around an iron core. These have been used for many years and are suitable for dimming with Leading Edge dimmers.

Electronic Transformers
In the last few years electronic transformers have become more popular due to their reduction in weight and manufacturing costs. Other benefits are reduced heat losses as the older wire-wound types typically produced alot of heat and could cycle the lamp on/off due to their internal thermal cut-out protection. Electronic transformers are most suited to Trailing edge dimming control, but in some cases may be used on certain leading edge dimmers, please consult the transformer manufacturer for the prefered dimming control method.

Electronic Transformer Compatibility Chart
Previously CIS have inspected manufacturers transformers to establish what value of input capacitance they put back onto a clipsal dimmer.
Please be advised that CIS no longer provide this service.
This input capacitance is due to the componentry added by manufacturers to achieve EMC compliance and reduce electrical interference back onto the incoming mains. CIS has now terminated this inspection service and recommends that you contact the transformer manufacturer to obtain the "input capacitance" value. Once the value is obtained the documents below can be used to calculate how many electronic transformers should be connected to a Clipsal Leading Edge dimmer.
